Empowering Women in Valorant
As the Red Bull Instalock tournament approaches, which showcases top-tier women's Valorant teams, I had the chance to chat with Amy "Amy" Lai and Aleyna "Vania" Keskin from G2 Gozen about their experiences on the team.
G2 Gozen has established itself as a dominant force in the female Valorant esports scene since its early days. Notably, they clinched the inaugural Game Changers Championship, the foremost competition for women in Valorant, with team captain Michaela "Mimi" Lintrup still leading the squad three years later.
In the past two years, G2 Gozen secured third place at the Game Changers Championships, facing off against Team Liquid in 2023 and MIBR in 2024. The team has seen several roster changes, including the recent departure of long-time player Petra "Petra" Stroker. The upcoming Red Bull Instalock will be the first official tournament for this new lineup.
Currently, G2 Gozen comprises Amy, Vania, and Mimi, along with Mathilde "Nelo" Beltoise and Esllene "Akita" Xu, who is yet to make her competitive debut with the team.
The significance of the Game Changers initiative cannot be overstated.
In the esports scene, the subject of women-only tournaments, like Game Changers, often sparks debate. Critics argue there are no inherent barriers keeping women from competing in mixed-gender settings. However, they overlook the social challenges, such as sexism and bias, that can hinder female players.
Amy shares her experience: "Playing ranked can be particularly tough for girls. It's usually where players start to hone their skills. When I first joined a team, communication was a major hurdle for me and many other women. In ranked matches, teammates often ignore us or are too hesitant to engage. This poor communication makes it hard for us to lead, as any attempt often leads to laughter or disregard."
She adds, "Game Changers provides a vital safe space for women to practice and feel at ease, which significantly contributes to their growth. If you look at the evolution of Game Changers over the last two years, the improvements in the players are remarkable, proving its value."
Launched in 2021, Game Changers has steadily expanded, with last year's championship taking place in Berlin. Ten teams competed, and Shopify Rebellion triumphed, finishing the tournament without a single loss.
The stigma surrounding women in competitive gaming is longstanding. Any female Valorant player would likely recount negative experiences linked to their voice being heard. This issue persists regardless of skill level.
Amy notes, "Many tier 1 and tier 2 teams are reluctant to scrim with us, including tier 3 teams, simply because they doubt our abilities. Yet, we’ve consistently shown that we can hold our own."
The journey towards equality and recognition in esports continues.
The perception that women in esports can become complacent is a prevalent stereotype. This idea suggests that female players might settle for lower competition levels, thereby hindering their potential for growth.
However, this viewpoint overlooks the intrinsic drive found in professional gamers. Players such as Florescent have demonstrated that programs like Game Changers offer a viable route to a professional career in Valorant.
"You have to start from somewhere, and Game Changers is an excellent launching pad," Vania states. "While it shouldn't be the end goal, I believe it poses no threat to a player's development."
Amy emphasizes that Game Changers serves as a beacon of hope for aspiring female gamers. The presence of a dedicated environment for women can inspire them to hone their skills and strive for a place in the competitive scene.
"When I first got into gaming, I wished there was a tournament exclusively for girls," Amy recalls. "Such platforms can inspire young girls to see themselves competing, motivating them to pursue their dreams."
Vania offers her wisdom to newcomers, encouraging them to "play frequently and concentrate on self-improvement. Trust in your abilities, and keep pursuing your aspirations."
Thus, a vibrant ecosystem for women in competitive Valorant continues to evolve.
Women in Esports Progress
Riot Games has taken significant strides to support women in the esports arena, particularly with the introduction of Game Changers shortly after Valorant's launch. In addition, many leading esports organizations have made efforts to establish teams dedicated to women-only competitions.
Vania shares her perspective, stating, "I believe they are making progress, but there is still room for improvement." She emphasizes the need for ongoing support from Riot, teams, and sponsors within the women's esports community.
Amy adds, "We are witnessing more LAN events now, such as the Game Changers LAN last split and tournaments like Instalock, which were nonexistent in the past. While there is always room for enhancement, I feel we are heading in a positive direction."
When asked about the top non-male Valorant players globally, aside from themselves and their teammates, the duo highlighted several names: Florescent, Julia "Jelly" Iris from MIBR, Nicolas "Srn" Niederaeuer also from MIBR, Nicole "Noia" Tierce of Shopify Rebellion Gold, and Bob "Bob" Tran from FlyQuest Red.
The Red Bull Instalock tournament is set to begin on May 2, featuring teams like Falcons Vega, FlyQuest Red, GiantX GC, and of course, G2 Gozen. The tournament will implement a "triple duelist" rule, requiring each team to pick three duelist characters for every match.
Confident about their prospects, Amy states, "We have the best players on our team. With our experience in playing duelists, it's going to be an exciting competition."
